Mumbai: 5 dead in Kamathipura building collapse; rescue operations end

The collapsed building was a 100 years old and in a dilapidated condition.

Five people died and three were injured after a three-story commercial building collapsed in Kamathipura area of Mumbai on Saturday afternoon. The BMC received a call about the collapse on 4th Road, Kamathipura at 2:10 pm in the afternoon.

10 fire engines vehicles were sent to the spot and over 60 fire officials worked on the rescue operation. Chief Fire Officer (CFO) PS Rahangdale said, "The east side of the building collapsed. We have rescued eight people and sent them Hospitals. One female and seven male were rescued in total."

Eight people were rescued out of those trapped under the debris of the collapsed building. The people rescued were taken to the JJ Hospital and Nair Hospital. Out of these eight, five were declared died. Four of the rescued were declared dead even before being admitted to the hospital. Among the dead  were four men and one woman.

Three of the deceased have been identified as: 
Saiful Mullah (25)
Wasim (14)
Anand Chaube (40)

Of the three people injured, two are in serious condition. They have been taken to the hospital and are undergoing treatment.


According to the fire officials, the rescue operation has now been completed. Talking about the operation, Rahangdale said, "We have used camera technique to rescue people from the debris. We have also instructed BMC building department to survey buildings adjacent to the collapsed buildings. According to us, the other buildings are also in dilapidated condition. It was a level three grade incident."

The collapsed building is said to have been over 100 years old. The building was partly under construction.
