If the Indian Railways isn't already in doldrums, another derailment on Friday has made it worse. This time, a suburban local train derailed near Mahim station in Mumbai at 9.55am. Three commuters sustained minor injuries, railway authorities said.

Railway authorities said that the train was heading for Andheri and was coming from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus on the Harbour line. It was manoeuvring a crossover and approaching Mahim station when four coaches derailed.

"The OHE cables wasn't holding power and so the motorman reversed the train. This is when derailment occurred," said an official from the Western Railway.

The local train belonged to the Central Railway but the derailment happened on the Western Railway's jurisdiction. Sources said that the portion where the derailment took place has a neutral section - wherein there is no power supply from the OHE cables to the train - and so there is a possibility that when the train halted, it could not get electric supply and so the motorman had to reverse.

"We have sent an accident relief train to the spot and it shall be soon re-railed," said Ravindra Bhakar, Chief PRO, Western Railway.

The exact cause of derailment is still to be investigated. Friday being the first day of the Ganesh festival and a public holiday, the railways expect less number of people to be affected. Yet, many were seen walking on the tracks to reach the nearest station.
