The incident happened near Pramod Mahajan garden outside Mhatre Pen building at Dadar west area which is usually a crowded place.

The shootout was reported outside Mhatre Pen building which houses many commercial industrial estates and public relations agencies and the main road outside the building usually filled up by flower traders on early morning who come to unload their trucks near the flower market. Also the area is near to Dadar railway station, flower market and is commuted by many people coming from western and central railway line.

According to the Dadar police, Maurya hailed from Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh and had came to Mumbai a decade back. He was staying with his brother Sanjay in a joint family at their MHADA flat on Bhavani Shankar Road which is close to the area where the incident took place. By profession, Maurya was in the repairs, maintenance, manufacturing and supplying of weighing scales and he was trading the same at Dadar market which brought him good contacts and better customers on daily basis. Instead of going to Plaza, Maurya was on his way to Tulsi Pipe Road and after being shot, Maurya was first spotted by his brother Sanjay who was passing by in his taxi.

"As we are probing the case, some of the hindrance for getting a breakthrough is the CCTV footage. The shoot out happened outside a commercial building and on the ground floor there are many shops whose cameras are facing towards the gate but most of it the not functional due to technical faults. Many footages were checked but a long distance view till the main gate was not found and also the main gate side is devoid of cameras. In one of the footage, an unknown person is seen moving around the deceased suspiciously and he could be the prime suspect behind the act." said a police officer of Dadar police station.

"We are going through the call records also to ascertain who called the deceased on Friday morning. A case has been registered under section 302 of the IPC and section 3 and 25 of the Arms Act and relative investigation is under progress." the officer added.
