Twenty-eight deadly wire snares set up to trap wild animals illegally inside Filmcity at Goregaon were removed and seized in an operation spanning for eight hours on Wednesday, by a team of around 25 people including staff from Thane forest department along with wildlife experts and enthusiasts.

After a few wire snares were found very close to the location where the carcass of leopard and sambar deer were found stuck in similar snares on Tuesday, Dr Jitendra Ramgaonkar, Deputy Conservator of Forest (DCF) Thane territorial decided to initiate an intensive combing operation across Filmcity.

On Wednesday the team that included 15 staff from the forest department and 13 members from the team of wildlife enthusiasts from Aarey Colony who have been helping the forest department in monitoring leopard activities using camera traps began the combing operation at around 10 am.

"We divided the group into three to four teams comprising of seven to eight people. They began scanning different areas on foot across Filmcity including the helipad area, Vihar Lake, Khandala point. By around 6 pm we had removed 28 snares," said Range Forest Officer (RFO) Santosh Kank.

Mayur Kamath, Wildlife Warden of Mumbai Suburbs and Member of State Wildlife Board who was part of the drive said that the joint exercise showed the extent of the problem.

"Most of the snares recovered were found near garbage that piled up close to shooting locations and near waterholes. The snares were placed near garbage to trap herbivores like spotted deer and sambar," said Kamath.

Meanwhile, during the drive, the team also stumbled upon some bones and skin near the Hathi Gate of Filmcity of what seemed like a Sambar. But only a detailed forensic report will help ascertain what animal it was and if it was a case of poaching.
