A man was arrested by the Cyber Crime Police on Wednesday for allegedly duping an UK-based engineer. The man, who works for a racket that calls up victims, claimed he persuaded people to transfer money online to several accounts and later told them the sum landed in some laundering case.

The accused has been identified as Aditya Tajendra Kohli, 25. The complainant — a former automobile engineer with an England-based company, said he quit his job on November 19 and wanted to come back to Mumbai.

The victim, on November 24, transferred money from his account in England to another account, joined with his father's, at Lokhandwala in Andheri. The victim had registered his mobile number with this account.

"Three days later, the victim received a call from one John Parker after he reached Heathrow Airport to fly to Mumbai. Parker, who we believe is a fake name, told the victim that his name has figured in a money laundering case and that he could be arrested. Parker told the victim that if he wanted to settle the case, he would have to give £2,000," police said.

To give the crime a real-incident look, Parker had also sent a bogus mail with the money laundering case details along with a registration number.

"Parker forced the complainant to share his account details, along with login name and password and transferred Rs 2 lakh from his Lokhandwala bank account to another account. At Heathrow Airport, the victim showed the email to the police," said the officer. The police sought the beneficiary's account number and Parker's email details and learnt that it belonged to Kohli.

"It was Kohli who had made the fraud calls to the victim. Once we got his location in Delhi, we apprehended him and brought him to Mumbai," the officer said.
