A 65-year-old woman was murdered on Tuesday night (December 9) by 24-year-old Deepak Pandey, who is from Azamgad in Uttar Pradesh. Pandey who stays in Dyaneshwar Nagar in Thane, smashed her face with a paver block and then threw her down from the third floor of the dilapidated No. 13 Kamgar hospital quarters in Wagle Estate.

Pandey was arrested on Thursday evening. He confessed to the crime, but has not disclosed the reason for killing her. The Wagle Estate police have booked him under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code. He will be produced in court on Friday.

According to the police, the woman was found profusely bleeding in the building around 9pm on Tuesday. She was rushed to the Thane civil hospital, but succumbed to her injuries.

The next day on inspecting the building, the police found blood stains, a few used condoms, a pillow, a bed (cut into pieces with a knife) and a paver block with blood stains. These have been sent to a forensic lab.
Investigation officer S Sakpal of Wagle Estate police station said: "We had earlier registered an ADR case as we were told by the locals that the woman had jumped from the third floor of the building, which was hard to believe.

So the next day, we went there and found blood stains on the floor and marks of the woman having been dragged from the spot to the gallery. The locals said they had never seen the woman in the area before. We also checked with other police stations to know whether there was any woman-missing complaint. Her identity is still not known, but we have registered a case of murder and are investigating."

AD Kshirsagar, senior police inspector in Wagle Estate station, said: "An eye witness said he had seen the man entering the building. We nabbed him in the evening. He has confessed to the crime, but has neither revealed the identity of the woman nor said why he had killed her."
