Mumbai: 20 guests fall ill after having dinner at Bandra wedding

At least 20 people fell ill at a wedding reception in Bandra East, on Sunday, and had to be rushed to a civic hospital amidst fears mass food poisoning. Some guests, after having the buffet dinner, started vomiting and they were promptly taken to the VN Desai Hospital in Santacruz. Many of the indisposed had to be admitted.

While nine patients were treated in the OPD of the hospital, 11, including four children were admitted though none were in a serious conditions. According to reports, the patients complained of similar symptoms which included vomiting, diarrhea and uneasiness, indicating that they were all suffering from food poisoning and that it was likely that some food served in the buffet was contaminated. Those admitted included mostly women and children, from 10-month old infant to a 65 year-old senior citizen.

According to the medical superintendent of the hospital, the patients were admitted for observation. "There is no serious concern and their condition is stable. We are in the process of giving them discharge today." said Dr Rajeshree Jadhav, Medical Superintedent, VN Desai Hospital.

"The Community Hall in Government Colony was booked for the night for the wedding of Mustaq Shaikh, and during the reception dinner, in between 7 pm and 11 pm, some people started vomiting and were taken to a hospital," said a police official.

"We came to know about the incident from the hospital and our team visited the venue immediately. We are carrying out an enquiry however no FIR has been registered as of yet." said Rajendra Patil, Senior Police Inspector, Kherwadi Police Station.
