Two senior citizens identified as Nafisa Gitthan (60) and Farida Master (66) died due to suffocation and 11 others, including two firemen, were injured after a fire broke out in a building at Punjab Mahal, in Bhendi Bazaar on Thursday night.'

The building's power supply was cut off. My sister-in-law couldn't see anything in the dark and was not able to figure out her way out to the building,' said a relative of Nafisa Gitthan, a 60-year-old resident who stayed alone.

Khozen Gitthan, brother-in-law of Nafisa, who stays nearby had called her to ask if she is fine after getting to know that a fire had broken out in her building. Khozen said, "One of our family members called her after listening about the incident. She received the call and said that there is chaos in the building and everyone is shouting. She was confused about whether to stay inside or run out. While she ran out, in utter darkness she did not know which way to go."

Salma Lakdawala said, "We are taking our basic belongings and going to our other relatives' houses. All the residents are vacating their houses for the time being. Since the building is made up of wood, the fire officials were facing difficulties in dousing the fire."

According to the fire brigade officials, the fire was confined to electric wiring, electric installation, and household articles. Around 12 residents were rescued from the ground plus four-storey residential building. The injured patients were shifted to Sir JJ Groups of Hospital. While 11 of the injured patients were shifted to the JJ Hospital, five were treated in the out-patient department (OPD) while the other six patients took discharge against medical advice (DAMA) on Friday morning.

Dr Sanjay Surase, medical superintendent of Sir JJ Hospital, said, "All the patients are stable. While two senior citizens, both female, were declared brought dead, none of the other patients were in a critical condition. All patients admitted to JJ Hospital were treated for suffering from suffocation. There were no burn injuries."
