Teenager was found dead at her house PS quarters, cops are yet to find cause of fire
A 16-year-old girl died in a fire that broke out in her residence at the police quarters situated alongside the Dadar Police Station, on Sunday afternoon. The girl was locked up inside the flat while her parents went to attend a wedding. The cops are trying to find out from the teenager's family why she was locked inside the room.
The flames that erupted at around 1.40pm in one of the quarters of the five-storey building, left one man injured. After an hour and a half, fire brigade officials took stock of the situation, the police said.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Sharavani Chavan, daughter of constable Ashok Chavan. An operator at the Dadar Police Station, on Sunday, received a call from a local resident of the building, who said that smoke can be seen in a house on the third floor. The police later alerted the fire brigade that discovered the dead body and informed the cops.
"After receiving the call, we rushed to the spot with four fire engines and three water tankers. We found the door to room number 37 locked from outside; the fire had started in that room and it was spreading to the other houses. After breaking the lock, we found the 16-year-old's body on the floor. She had suffered major burns," said divisional fire officer SB Karade.
The fire brigade officials also discovered a plastic bottle next to the body in a semi-burnt state. It smelt like kerosene. "The bottle might have had an inflammable liquid, evident from its smell. Forensic experts are on the case and so is the police," added Karade.
"It is a matter of investigation if the girl died in the fire or was she playing with some inflammatory substance that accidentally caught fire. The body has been sent to the Sion hospital for post-mortem," a senior police officer said on the condition of anonymity.
A distant relative of the family said, "The teenager was a bright child and was always in a jolly mood. It's difficult for us to accept whatever happened. We hope the police come out with a proper report."
