The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is on a special inspection drive on Khairani Road, Sakinaka with regards to fire safety compliance in the industrial units. The drive started on April 11 and till now the officers have inspected 1,500 industrial units of which 150 were found violating fire safety norms and are prosecuted.

The inspection drive is undertaken considering the frequent fire incidents on Khairani road in last four months. It was in December 2017 when the fire broke in Bhanu farsan factory in the locality which killed 12 people.

"Since December 2017 three major fire incidents have taken place in the industrial units on Khairani Road and in entire Kurla, Sakinaka area (L ward) 25 minor fires are reported. Since April 11, we inspected 1,500 units of which 150 are prosecuted and from 90 units we have confiscated all the goods stored. We have communicated to Chief Fire Officer to seal the industrial units which were found violating fire safety norms", said Assistant Municipal Commissioner, Ajitkumar Ambi. The violators will have to pay fine ranging from Rs 5,000 to 50,000, he added.

Ambi said, "It is observed that maximum fire incidents on Khairani Road are in farsan, bakery shops, laundry units where coal is used and units which carries aluminium melting work. Accordingly, we have categorized the industrial units where inspections are carried".

Khairani road in Sakinaka is majorly covered with industrial units of which many do not hold required licensees from BMC to carry out the commercial activities and also does have clearances from Mumbai Fire Brigade. Many of the units are found stored excessive amount of combustible materials including gas cylinders, chemicals, oil etc resulting high risk to cause the fire.
