The city crime branch claims to have solved the murder case of an 18-month-old baby girl, whose decomposed body was found on December 18 under Sion flyover. The arrested suspect, who is into catering business, was allegedly having an affair with the mother of the deceased girl and considered the girl a hurdle in their relationship, police said.
The arrested person has been identified as Mohammad Asgar Madiul Rehman Shaikh, 42.
According to joint commissioner of police, crime, Sadanand Date, around 4am on December 14, Afreen Shaikh was abducted from the footpath at Bhau Daji Road in Sion. Her mother Chandini, 20, had lodged a missing person's complaint in this regard with Sion police station, while the Antop Hill unit of crime branch initiated a parallel probe into the matter.
Four days later, when Afreen's body was found below Sion flyover, the crime branch sleuths scanned through the CCTV footages of the nearby housing societies in order to get clues, said additional commissioner of police, crime, KMM Prasanna.
"In one of the footages of a housing society, a person could be seen carrying a child to the spot where the body was found," said assistant commissioner of police, Praful Bhosale.
"When we made inquiries with all those staying on footpath in that area Shaikh's name cropped up. A few persons identified the man in the CCTV footage to be Shaikh, who also stays on a footpath in the Sion area. During investigation, we also learnt that Shaikh has been in an affair with Chandini for the past seven months. After keeping track for two days we managed to get hold of him," said a police officer.
Shaikh told the police during interrogation that he had plans to flee with Chandini, but considered Chandini's girl as a hindrance. "On December 14, he abducted the girl, murdered her and dumped her body under the flyover. Chandini was unaware about this entire episode," the officer added.
