A multi-armed flyover that the BMC plans to construct at JVPD junction in the western suburbs is expected to bring much relief from nasty traffic snarls by deviating much of the vehicular flow. According to civic officials, one of its arms is likely to be connected to the upcoming coastal road of the city. However, commuters will have to wait for two years for the flyover to be ready.

Five different roads meet at the JVPD junction. Additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas said that the project was recently taken over by the BMC from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). "The MMRDA had already carried out a feasibility report on the bridge. We have recently taken over the project from them," he said.

Srinivas also said that a few utilities may have to be shifted during the flyover's construction. "It will have three to four arms; one of them will connect to Guru Nanak Road and the other will connect to Andheri station road. One of the arms will also connect to the Versova beach (coastal road)," he said.

The BMC will soon be inviting tenders for the project, but work will start only after the monsoons are over. The project is estimated to cost Rs 90 crore.

Ashoke Pandit, an activist from the area, welcomed the move and said that residents associations will team up with the BMC to ensure that the flyover is constructed without any delay. "The Juhu circle area has become a nightmare and a flyover there was long due," Pandit said.
