A day after taking charge as the acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Mumbai, Dr Devanand Shinde said that he would soon appeal for more teachers to undertake assessment of papers.

Speaking to DNA, Shinde said, "I have just taken charge and i am trying to take a stock of the situation here. After a couple of meetings, I think there are three key areas we need to work on — administration, evaluation and technology. My focus would be on bringing together all stakeholders at the university to address delays and glitches in these departments." On Friday, he will be meeting the university's technical team to address the issues.

Shinde is the Vice Chancellor of Shivaji University in Kolhapur. He has been given the additional charge of the University of Mumbai after VC Dr Sanjay Deshmukh went on leave on Wednesday.

Shinde said that the university is working on getting more teachers to evaluate papers. "The university is facing some challenges in bringing on aboard teachers for subjects such as Taxation, Law etc as most of them are full time CAs and lawyers, and are busy in their fields. In the next few days, we would appeal these teachers to evaluate papers so that results can be declared in time." On Thursday, Shinde met all the key officials at the university to understand the issue. He said that while one cannot clearly state a deadline, the focus is on completing the assessment and sorting technical glitches to speed up the process. The university is hoping to get help from its sub centres at Aurangabad, Shivaji, Kolhapur, and Nagpur universities.

Shinde also assured that students due to take admission in other universities would not have to wait for confidential results. Around two lakh papers were yet to be evaluated as on Thursday, majority of which belong to the commerce stream.
