The University of Mumbai doesn't seem to have learnt a lesson. Despite a series of glitches that delayed the on-screen evaluation of papers of more than 4 lakh students, the university might not do away with the existing service provider, MeritTrac. The exams will begin on November 8.

"After being a part of the on-screen evaluation process, MeritTrac has understood the system. With less than two months to go for the exams, it will be better to retain the old system" said a senior official from the university.

The government, in a meeting on Sunday, gave the university a go ahead for conducting the exams in an on-screen manner. While Governor C Vidyasagar Rao and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asked the university officials to get rid of the glitches, a decision on whether MeritTrac will be retained was pending.

The agency earlier came under the scanner after several glitches hampered the OSM process. University officials then largely attributed the delay to the system's poor functioning. Despite several complaints from teachers and other stakeholders, the government is yet to take action.

With the university likely to go ahead with the agency, teachers are now concerned. "The assessment work was delayed due to technical errors. The agency was very slow in addressing issues faced at the time of assessment. If this continues, it will delay winter session results," said a senior faculty member from a suburban college.

Meanwhile, the university, which called a meeting with principals of affiliated colleges on Monday, said the schools should ensure that the teachers are trained in ICT.

Several pink slips follow V-C’s ‘forced leave’

With the university Vice-Chancellor Dr Sanjay Deshmukh being sent on ‘forced leave’, many who were appointed by him may now face the axe.

On Monday, the university removed the additional charge of the post of Director, Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), from Dr Ambuja Salgaonkar, an appointment that happened during Deshmukh’s tenure, for the delay in initiating the admission process, and appointed Dr Dhaneshwar Harichandan, a professor at IDOL instead.

“Some of the appointments made by Dr Deshmukh are being criticised by all the stakeholders,” said a university insider.
