22-km-long Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) connecting Sewri in Mumbai with Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai, the construction work for MTHL is also expected to start by next month
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is also the Chairman of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), on Tuesday signed agreement with contractors for construction of 22-km-long Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) connecting Sewri in Mumbai with Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai, the construction work for MTHL is also expected to start by next month.
The MMRDA said once the construction work begins next month, it will take another 4-5 years for completing the project which is India's longest proposed Sea Link.
"Today, we have taken a major step towards attaining faster connectivity with Navi Mumbai and Konkan region and its development," said Fadnavis after signing the agreement.
The agreement signed on Tuesday with contractors were of two civil construction packages out of total three. "The agreement was signed with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and IHI Japan for package 1 and L&T independently for package 3. Another agreement in a joint venture with Tata Project & Daewoo Korea will be signed soon, MMRDA said in a statement on Tuesday.
Present at the event included Keiichi ISHII, Minister of Transport and Tourism, Land, Infrastructure, Government of Japan along with Kenko Sone, Minister, Economic and Development, Embassy of Japan in India. The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is funding almost 85 per cent of the project cost of MTHL.
MTHL is a 22-km-long cable stay bridge and will be the second longest sea-link in the world after the 42-km sea link in China.
The project has been on paper since the 1980s due to lack of clearances.
