Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has initiated the work for a new film city called 'Bollywood' near the Sindhudurg region on the lines of 'Hollywood' in Los Angeles. The facilities will be spread over 300 acres of land and hope to be the new destination for film shooting.

MTDC officials said the project is taking shape at Nandos near the Sindhudurg region which boasts of tremendous natural beauty. It also shares the border with Goa which attracts scores of domestic and international tourists. "Bollywood is a very important USP of the state and we want film enthusiasts and travellers to get a feel of film-making from close quarters," said an official.

The official added that the project which is expected to come up at a cost of over Rs2,000 crore is to be financed by national and foreign investors with whom talks are already on. As per the plan, the project will have the letters 'BOLLYWOOD' put up on hills in a similar manner the letters 'HOLLYWOOD' are installed in Los Angeles in the US.

The development comes after a recent initiative by MTDC, wherein the corporation started 'Bollywood Tourism' along with private operators. In this, tourists are taken in groups to the film city in Goregaon and certain other studios and given a feel of film and television serial-making. This has become very popular among tourists, the officials informed.
