The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is going to replace the aluminum make of the buses with mild steel, which is sturdier. The first of these buses is being manufactured at Dapodi in Pune and shall soon join the fleet.

The bus terminals and stands will also have canteens and toilets --- a separate one for women passengers. The existing toilets are being revamped under Corporate Social Responsibility and passenger need not pay anything.

The MSRTC has also redesigned uniform of staff in colours of khaki, grey, blue and brown. "All this is good but the core issue of salary and allowances should be addressed at the earliest. These employees should get whatever hike they deserve," said Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, at an MSRTC programme on Saturday.

The move comes to ensure that buses suffer minimum damage while on the road and passengers remain safe in case of an accident.

"We are working on manufacturing the mild steel buses at our unit in Dapodi. We are also coming out with a new colour scheme of red and white for buses called Laal Pari, which will operate as Shivshahi," said Diwakar Raote, Maharashtra transport minister.

Sources said that mild steel is stronger and sturdier than aluminum alloy. The 18,600 buses are made of aluminum that is sleek and allows buses to go at higher speed but during accidents, it is prone to severe damage. The design of these buses will also get swankier with a fresh design, bigger windows, and comfortable seats.

Apart from this, they proposed improving the condition of bus depots, toilets, bus stops and canteens across the state. In the first phase, it is going to redevelop 80 of the total 568 bus stations, 3,500 bus stops and 609 bus depots across the state. These are in very bad shape and in interiors of the state, these are in filthy condition with garbage dumped, people have made them in spittoon and poorly maintained.

The MSRTC is now going to revamp them entirely for which 80 architects are being roped in across the state for doing this job. More than 67 lakh passengers travel on MSRTC buses across the state daily.
