The smoke-spewing, battered, red and yellow Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus fleet is in for a glossy makeover. MSRTC plans to introduce 2,000 new buses each year to gradually phase out vehicles that are more than 10 years old.

The new vehicles, purchased for Rs 140 crore, are likely to offer an economical, comfortable and safe ride to commuters. They will be loaded with special features, including push-back seats made of sturdier material offering extra protection to passengers in the event of accidents.

"The new buses that we have purchased are manufactured with sturdier materials," said Uttam Khobragade, MSRTC managing director. "Initially, we used aluminium, which has now been replaced by steel, which is also more durable. We hope this will bring down the number of casualties in the event of a serious accident."

Presently, MSRTC has a 16,000 strong fleet connecting 44,000 villages in the state, with an enviable record of 0.2 accidents per one lakh kilometres, better than any private bus operator.

"MSRTC practices safety measures like conducting medical check-ups to ensure our  drivers are healthy," said Neera Asthana, MSRTC's public relations officer. "We offer incentives for accident-free records and conduct alcohol checks on drivers, before they embark on dangerous routes along the Ghats."
