A trauma care centre that is already constructed since years but not made operational on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will get an operator soon with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) now planning to appoint a charitable trust to run the trauma care centre that will aid victims of accidents that take place on the Expressway.

Currently, accident victims are rushed to either MGM Hospital in Panvel or towards Pune as there is no other option available on the Expressway. The trauma care centre constructed in Ozarde on Mumbai Pune Expressway is being planned for giving first aid or stabilising accident victims. The Siddhivinayak Temple Trust in Dadar has already agreed to fund the medical instruments and equipment that will be required for the trauma centre.

A MSRDC official said, "We have floated bids for appointing a charitable trust as the Siddhivinayak Temple Trust has said that they will fund the required materials for the trauma care centre only if the operator for the same is a charitable trust or is associated with a charitable trust."

The official added, "One of the reasons why we are not able to get an operator for the trauma care centre since years is because no doctor or medical expert wants to practice on the Expressway, as there will not be much experience for him/ her as patients will come to the trauma centre only in case of emergencies during accidents. However, this cannot be the excuse for not providing emergency medical aid and now we plan to find a charitable trust that will run the trauma centre."

Operational since 2002, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has seen around 5,000 accidents, with around 1,400 deaths in the past seven years.

Meanwhile, with trauma care centre, an air ambulance service is also expected to start on the Expressway as the trauma care centre also has the facility to have two heliports.
