By mid-2019, the 16-year old Mumbai-Pune Expressway will turn smarter. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is hoping to introduce intelligent traffic management system (ITMS) on this 95 kms long highway by then. The procedure shall start from October once the authorities are done finalising the report on its implementation.

The officials said that presently a private consultant has been asked to study it and they shall submit the report by October. "After that we shall call for tenders for going ahead with implementation of ITMS. We do not know to what extent will we be able to install, unlike that planned for the Nagpur-Mumbai Communication Highway," said a MSRDC official.

Once tenders are called. It will take close to 9-10 months for actual implementation. "Ideally whatever has been planned under ITMS should be first tried on Mumbai-Pune Expressway. It will help in realising its working," said Diwakar Raote, state Transport minister.

The ITMS proposed will also have digital indicators that shall not only show the route, maps but also inform about weather conditions. In case of any accident, traffic jams, repair works or land slide then messages shall be displayed on the board warning other motorists. The CCTVs shall have sensors that will register vehicle numbers, its speed and send e-challan.
