In a major relief to Mumbaikars, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) will inform its consumers in advance when they are going to visit their houses for reading the meter. To make electricity billing process more transparent, MSEDCL staff will read the meter in presence of the consumer.

"We will SMS our customers to registered mobile numbers and inform them about the date and time of meter reading. The message will be sent a day prior to the reading date," says P S Patil, chief public relations officer, MSEDCL.

The readings will be taken in slots between 8a to 10 am, 10am to noon, 12pm to 3pm and 3pm to 5pm. "The customers can choose to be present during any of these slots to see that the meter reading is taken properly and accurately," he said.

The purpose is to ensure that people are aware about their power consumption and billing, and the doubts about being overbilled are resolved.

MSEDCL has over 2.50 crore consumers, out of which over two crores have registered their mobile numbers. To avail of this facility, the power company has appealed people to register their mobile numbers through their toll free number 1800 1023435 or website www.mahadiscom.in or mobile app.

To improve their billing process, MSEDCL started taking meter readings of consumers through their mobile application since August 2016. Now, the customers get their monthly bills through SMS even before they get a printed copy. The power company, however, stopped printing photos of the meter reading since February this year on the bill copy.
