Under pressure from commuters, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has written to the forest department seeking permission to build an elevated rail over a patch of mangroves as part of the Thane-Diva 5-6 lines, which have been stuck for nearly 10 years.

The elevated portion is a diverted part between Kalwa and Mumbra.

Last week, the MRVC made a fresh effort to expedite the process to seek permission from the forest department for constructing a 800-metre-long railway bridge over the trees. The addition was made in the project plan after the officials realised that boring the Parsik tunnels further could damage the existing tunnel on the slow lines which were built in the late 1800s.

The decision was taken after a joint meeting between Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani and all railway officials.

MRVC officials said they have written to the forest department, Nagpur, for clearances. It will take at least six months to build the bridge.

The Rs 440-crore Thane-Diva 5-6 lines were sanctioned in 2008 under MUTP 2B to segregate long-distance and suburban trains between Kurla and Kalyan stations.
