MOU signed to set up Sankara Nethralaya in Thane

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Friday between civic chief Sanjeev Jaiswal and Dr SS Badrinath of Sankara Nethralaya to set up the prestigious eye hospital in Thane.

"Sankara Nethralaya will be set up in Maharashtra for the first time and we have allotted an area of 8,400 sqmt at Kolshet to set up the hospital. Soon, the foundation stone for the same would be laid down," said Jaiswal.

He added: "In addition to the hospital there would be a training centre for paramedical staff along with a research centre."

A public poll was also conducted by the civic chief earlier to bring in the prestigious Sankara Nethralaya in the city for which support poured in from across the city. Thanekars are happy that finally the most noted eye institute will be a part of the city and would add on to the existing health infrastructure.

The eye hospital will be operational in two years and would cater to the needs of Thanekars and adjoining areas.

The hospital would provide 40% treatment free of cost and the remaining treatment would be provided on a subsidised rate with the best available machinery and man power. It is also termed as the best specialty hospital in Opthalmology since 1978. It was also the first eye hospital in India to do exclusive eye research in clinical and basic science.
