The cases of banking frauds — vishing, cyber stalking, impersonation on social media sites, and job and lottery frauds registered with the city’s cyber police department in the year 2016 have decreased significantly. However, the number of cases solved by the cyber cell has remained consistently low for the last four years, with only 20 per cent success rate.

Eighty per cent of the crimes registered in the year 2016 remain undetected, according to the report shared by the cyber cell. It also reveals that the total number of cases registered in the year 2016 has gone down by 50 per cent vis-a-vis the last year. Two eighty two cases were registered in 2015, which dipped to 145 in 2016.

Despite the fact that the number of cases reported at the cyber police station has reduced, officers claim that the figures have sunk owing to the awareness campaigns and registration of cyber complaints in other police stations of Mumbai also.

Meanwhile, the cyber police officers also says, “detecting cyber cases have become challenging as most of the criminals use servers based out of India. This acts as a major hurdle in solving the cases due to long drawn procedures which are mostly off our limit. We have been continuously working on it to crack down online frauds and are closing down websites that have been involved in sharing obscene content among other crimes,”said a senior officer from the cyber police station.

The officer also added that, “There is a need to upgrade skilled manpower and technology to help detect cases more swiftly.”

Interestingly, though the number of vishing cases registered with the cyber police station have gone down, the Twitter handle of Mumbai Police is flooded with citizens tweeting the mobile numbers from which they received calls asking for bank and card details.

The online team of Mumbai Police forwards these complaints to the BKC cyber police station and also keeps guiding and warning people against taking such calls and disclosing personal details to anyone posing as a bank official.
