The recent Supreme Court judgement and Aruna Shanbaug's case has made many citizens willing to know more about euthanasia.

A Girgaum-based NGO Society for Right to Die With Dignity has been creating awareness and handling inquiries regarding euthanasia for the past few decades. Dr Surendra Dhelia, joint secretary of the NGO said that it is necessary to create awareness in society about euthanasia.

The number of inquiries through phone calls and questions has increased after the March 9 Supreme Court judgment on passive euthanasia.

According to Dr Dhelia, the NGO has been receiving calls from other cities as well to speak about euthanasia to senior citizens. "It is an informal group. During the talk I make people understand what is euthanasia, kinds of euthanasia i.e. passive, active and physician-assisted suicide and the legal situation. Voluntary and involuntary request by people who are suffering. We get a handful of calls every month," said Dr Dhelia.

The Girgaum-based couple, Narayan Lavate and Iravati Lavate, who has been requesting the President for euthanasia had visited the NGO a few months ago. "There is no way that active euthanasia is given agreement by law. The active euthanasia is also applicable to terminally ill patients. But the couple is fit and fine," added Dr Dhelia.

After the SC judgment, they have received four calls from Mumbai, one from Delhi, Goa and Pune, either to talk about euthanasia or to visit them and spread awareness on it to the group of citizens.
