To top the problem of not testing CNG tanks, sources have also revealed that the drivers resort to illegal practices of getting their CNG tanks tested from mechanics and roadside fitters which leaves glitches in the testing method.

It has become a normal practice for the drivers to go to the roadside mechanics for CNG tank testing, claimed the members of Taximen's union.

They have to barely pay Rs 800 to Rs 1200 depending on the vehicle. They also get the plate, which determines the date of inspection of these CNG tanks, replaced. The plate could be cut from any metal piece and used in these autos and taxis.

"We have been informed by these testing centres that the vehicles are getting duplicate plates and testing done from illegal centres. There are several illegal roadside shops that are functional for this purpose," said AL Quadros, the union leader.

A mechanic said that the practice proves to be beneficial for the drivers who end up saving money but pay little heed to the safety. "We have to pay our monthly EMIs on vehicle, have to fill CNG everyday plus our earnings have been hit since mobile aggregators like Ola and Uber have entered the market. How do we manage spending Rs 4000 on CNG tank testing?," said Dinesh Sharma, a black and yellow taxi driver from Mumbai Central area.

For the taxis and autos, the tanks have to be checked every 3 years while the regular CNG installed cars need to be checked every 5 years.
