With the weekday passenger ridership of Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro-1 reaching 3.35 lakh passenger per day, the operator Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) has said that it will increase the number of daily trips from 370 trips per weekday to more than 380 trips in order to cater to the increasing ridership during during peak hours on weekdays.

In November 2017, the Metro-1 corridor was handling around 1 crore passengers monthly compared to the earlier average between 77 lakh to 99 lakh every month between January 2016 to October 2017.

"Mumbai Metro-1 has very dynamic trip schedules designed on the basis of commuter footfalls. As ridership grew, we have increased the number of trips too particularly during peak hours on weekdays," said a MMOPL spokesperson.

For instance, from July 20, 2017 MMOPL increased the number of trips to 376 and further to 378 in October 2017. From January 16, 2018 weekday trips were further increased to more than 380.

According to official data accessed by DNA, MMOPL ran a total 1.25 lakh services in 2016 when the average per day ridership was between 2.49 lakh to 3.01 lakh passengers. In 2017, MMOPL ran a total of 1.24 lakh services when the average per day ridership was between 2.99 lakh to 3.35 passengers.

The MMOPL spokesperson attributed the difference because of more holidays in 2017 when compared with 2016. "The difference in number of trips is merely on account of more public holidays including Sundays in 2017. Also, 2016 was a leap year, which added an extra weekday, thus adding to number of trips," MMOPL spokesperson said.

Mumbai Metro-1 is the eight densest Metro corridor in the world with 12 Metro stations between Versova and Ghatkopar. It was constructed under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model wherein MMOPL has 69 per cent stakes, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has 26 per cent stakes and France based Veolia has 5 per cent stakes.
