According to official data accessed by DNA, the number of failures in the rolling stock (coaches) of Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro-1 corridor has increased from a total of 24 failures in 2016 to 35 failures in 2017 followed by the number of failures in the signalling system of Metro-1 increasing from 148 failures in 2016 to 189 in 2017.

However, Reliance Infrastructure-led Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) that operates the corridor has termed these 'failures' as 'faults'.

According to data from the monthly reports prepared by the Independent Engineer (IE) of the corridor, reasons like the automatic doors not closing or opening at times and issues in the battery cells or the train not moving at a higher speed are behind some of the failures.

A MMOPL spokesperson said, "We accord uncompromising priority to the safety of commuters and performance standards. Our robust and proactive reporting regime is geared towards identifying each minor fault and undertaking immediate remedial action so that these do not graduate to service-disrupting failures. Our stringent adherence to the highest safety norms and practices has helped maintain world-class standards of 99.9 per cent punctuality with nil mishaps."

Meanwhile, the number of failures in the coaches came down in the last six months of 2017 as compared to the first six months. There were around 22 failures in the rolling stock of Metro-1 between January 2017 and June 2017, however, there were only around 13 failures between July 2017 and December 2017.

In case of signalling failures there were around 45 failures in the first six months of 2016 and around 103 failures in the last six months of 2016. In 2017, there were around 93 failures in the first six months of 2017 and 96 failures in the last six months of 2017.

Further, the number of failures have come down in 2017 when compared to 2016 in case of telecommunication system of Metro-1, Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates and lifts and escalators at Metro stations.
