If Shiv Sena corporator Arvind (Arun) Dudhwadkar has his way, the Queen’s Necklace will introduce the city’s culture to scores of tourists coming to Nariman Point from various parts of the world.

Dudhwadkar has demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) erect sculptures and plaques for tourists visiting the iconic road. The corporator from ward number 211 has moved a notice of motion in this regard.

In the motion, Dudhwadkar has suggested the BMC follow the concept of ‘True Mumbaikars’ implemented at Worli seafront. In Worli, sculptures of kolis (fishermen), sailors, common man, etc have been installed.

“Mumbai is called the country’s financial capital. As the city sees a large number of tourists, we should highlight its culture. So, like in Worli, sculptures made of fibre should be installed at Nariman Point,” Dudhwadkar has suggested in the motion, which is expected to be discussed during the general body meeting of the BMC this month.

The corporation should install sculptures of fishermen, dabbawalas, bhel vendors, local trains and the BEST buses, among other things at the venue, the corporator said. In addition to this, Dudhwadkar has demanded that the civic body install plaques which will inform visitors about the city’s major and popular festivals, such as Ganeshotsav, Dahi Handi, Pateti, Eid and Christmas, in Marathi and English. “If we do this, we will be able to spread information about Mumbai,” the corporator said.

The motion will require the nod of the municipal House. Once the House passes the resolution, it will require the approval of the municipal commissioner (Sitaram Kunte) to be effective.

While Kunte could not be reached for his comment, a senior civic official, requesting anonymity, said, “We are yet to see the proposal. Let it come to us first. Decision in this regard will only be taken after proper study.”
