A 20-year-old girl hanged herself on Monday at her brother’s residence in Kandivli (West). The police are yet to ascertain why the woman, who had to come to the city six days ago, committed suicide.

Anjali Srivastava was sleeping on the ground floor of the house at Abdul Latif chawl in Lokmanya Tilak Nagar, while her brother Vikas was on the first floor with his wife and 10-month-old daughter. Vikas found Anjali hanging from the ceiling when he woke up around 8am. She was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The police have registered a case of accidental death but are investigating to find out why Anjali killed herself and have sent her body for autopsy.

“Anjali had completed her graduation in Patna and wanted to study further. So her father sent her to Mumbai to stay at her brother’s place,” said senior inspector Hareshwar Pimple from Kandivli police station.

Vikas told the police that the family had gone to Juhu beach on Sunday. Later, they had dinner together and saw a few serials on television. Anjali was asleep when Vikas had gone downstairs to drink water late at night.

The family told the police that they didn’t suspect any foul play in the matter. Srivastava allegedly had an affair with a man in Patna and that’s why she was sent to Mumbai. “We are investigating to find out the reason behind her suicide,” said a officer from Kandivli police station.
