Although monsoon is yet to hit the city full throttle, the moderate showers the city witnessed on Thursday was enough to water-log SEEPZ on Jogeshwari-Vikroli Link Road (JVLR), which hit the motorists hard in the peak hours in the morning. The Reliance Energy office in SEEPZ had around 1.5 to 2 ft surrounding it due to the debris dumped by the contractor constructing the Metro car shed in the area, civic body officials said.

“We had cleaned the roadside drains. Only after receiving a complaint call we found out that there was an almost five feet of material dumped in the concrete yard by J Kumar & Company. Due to the debris dumped, rainwater couldn’t flow into the drains. We immediately pressed heavy machinery into action to clear the area, finally enabling the drainage,” Devendrakumar Jain, Assistant Munici pal Commissioner, said.

“Officers from Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) were also present at the site. We have asked them to take strict action against J Kumar & Company,” Jain said.

As water had collected post the midnight downpour, it began affecting traffic only vehicles began plying on Friday morning. The traffic started easing only after 12 noon.

Bhavna Joshi, a resident of Goregaon said, “I left for Kanjurmarg around 8.30 am and got caught in the massive JVLR traffic. It took me four hours to reach a place that is barely 45 minutes away.”

Stalin D, an environmental activist said, “I had raised concerns on this. Since SEEPZ is a low-lying area, the water from there is drained to Mithi river. The dumped debris were bound to hinder this flow and lead to waterlogging. However, the MMRDA and Chief Ministers Office did not take the issue seriously.”
