Dengue and swine flu have emerged deadly for the city’s health. While a 13-year-old boy succumbed to dengue on Wednesday, a 75-year-old woman succumbed to swine flu late on Tuesday.

Anup Karwar, a Std VII student, residing in Motilal Nagar, Goregaon (West), got high fever on Monday. His neighbour, Ravindra Gangurde, said, “He was admitted to Kapadia Hospital on Tuesday for close to eight hours. As his condition worsened, he was shifted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri. He died there on Wednesday morning.”

Dr Ram Narain, medical director of Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital confirmed that the patient died due to dengue shock syndrome.

The civic body-run Kasturba Hospital saw the other death on Tuesday night. A 75-year-old woman succumbed to swine flu at the hospital’s isolation unit.

Epidemiologist in the civic body Dr Mangala Gomare said, “The patient was admitted for diarrhoea and breathlessness on Tuesday and died later in the day. The cause of death was pneumonitis with septic shock. She was a hypertensive and had tested positive for H1N1.”

The 75-year-old is the first from Mumbai city to have succumbed to swine flu this year.

Last week, a Kalyan resident had succumbed to the H1N1 virus in Kasturba Hospital.
Till August, 48 people had tested positive for swine flu in the city, while 410 patients have been recorded to have dengue.

Dengue has claimed four lives in Mumbai this year, while swine flu has claimed one. Also, this year, 533 people across Maharashtra have been affected by the H1N1 virus, out of which 124 have died.
