With the trial runs for the second phase of Monorail between Wadala and Jacob Circle being conducted successfully, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will now approach the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) for obtaining safety certificate in order to commission the second phase.

The CRS will subsequently conduct trial run fro around 3,000-km on the stretch and give a safety certificate for the same. It is only after having the safety certificate from the CRS, MMRDA would be able to commission the second phase by December, this year.

Sanjay Khandare, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, said, "We are currently carrying out the trial runs on our level and would be writing to the CRS for the safety certificate by July end. Subsequently, the CRS will carryout trial runs according to the specification and its requirement. We are confident of commissioning the second phase by the year end."

According to MMRDA officials, the trial runs so far is satisfactory. There are several issues relating to the signaling and communication between the control room and the pilot. It is very important to have coordination between signaling and the communication of the corridor and the same will get better with more trial runs being conducted," said a MMRDA official.

However, the MMRDA might struggle with the frequency of the Monorail as out of the total 15 rakes required to run the corridor, only 10 are with MMRDA and out of these 10, only six are functional. "By the time second phase is commissioned, the remaining four would be available. For the remaining five to take the number of rakes up to 15, Scomi Engineering, the contractor appointed by MMRDA, has assured that they would be delivered in next eight to nine months."
