On Friday, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) patted its back after it conducted a trial run of Mumbai Monorail on I-Day on a part of its overall second phase between Wadala Depot and Jacob Circle.

The fact is, out of the 10.6kms in the phase II, it has already been operating without passenger services from Wadala Depot to the next station - Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB), the stretch of which is just 1km. Therefore, the only new stretch covered on Monday was going ahead by another 2kms. It still has to cover the balance length from the larger 10.6-km of second phase. The first phase is between Chembur and Wadala Depot with 8.93-kms of length.

Speaking about the held trial run, a MMRDA spokesperson stated that train number 9 was utilised and the trial commenced at 8.31 am. It reached Acharya Atre after crossing GTB Nagar and Antop Hill at 8.44 am. It commenced its return journey at 8:47 am only to end it at Wadala Depot at 9am.

The trial was conducted at a precautionary speed of 15kmph. Cautious about the series of incidents bogging the monorail system, MMRDA official clarified that there were "no problems" encountered during the run.

The consortium of LTSE (Larsen & Toubro-Scomi Engineering) implementing the project are yet to carry out balance works till Jacob Circle. Even the balance five monorail trains are yet to arrive from Scomi's Malaysian manufacturing plant.
