The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning to have space reserved for women commuters in the four coach Chembur-Jacob Circle Monorail corridor by reserving one full or half coach dedicated for women commuters.

This move is aimed at covering up the shortage of Monorail trains which leads to lesser frequency of monorail trains. The MMRDA is planning to start both the phases of Monorail by March end after a safety nod is granted by Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS).

MMRDA is anticipating that it will reduce the load to 1 lakh passengers per day as compared to the current load of 15,000 passengers per day when the first phase was operational between Chembur and Wadala. A MMRDA official, said, “We have a total 10 Monorail trains available with us of which only six are fit to run for the operations, and rest under maintenance. Due to fewer trains, we anticipate frequency will be less, and this will result in more crowd in every train.”

The official, added, “So, in case of increased crowd entering the train, there might be a possibility that women commuters feel uncomfortable, and hence we are planning to reserve either one full or half coach in Monorail for women commuters.”
