The number of deaths that have taken place in the process of giving ‘world class’ infrastructure to Mumbaikars now stands at 10 after one died at a monorail site on Friday morning near Arthur Road jail. Till date, 39 people have suffered injuries at construction sites for public transport and infrastructure projects in Mumbai.

Dilip Kawathkar, spokesperson of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, said, “An accident occurred at the monorail site near Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk station area at Sane Guruji Marg around 11.45am. A mobile crane was carrying the concreting funnel from the station to the adjacent switch deck location. A helper, Mohammad Hameed Alam, 21, was moving with the funnel in front of the crane. It appears that he slipped, which went unnoticed by the driver, and was run over.”

Alam had arrived in the city a week ago from his home town in Uttar Pradesh to join his brother, a sub contractor at the site.

“Four of us were transporting a concrete funnel hooked to the crane. We were holding the funnel to prevent it from dangling by walking ahead of the crane. Alam lost his balance and fell. We tried to alert the driver, but he was out of earshot. He ran the crane wheel over Alam,” said Kishore, 22, Alam’s friend.

Kishore Baviskar, senior inspector of Agripada police station, said, “We have registered a case under section 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence) against the crane driver who is on the run. Alam’s body was taken to Nair hospital. He was declared dead on arrival.

The body will be handed over to his family members who also work as labourers at the site.”

Victim’s brother Mohammad Sameer, 26, said, “His last rituals will be performed in Mumbai once our family members arrive from our native place.”

This is not the first time a hydra crane of contractor J Kumar is in the news for the wrong reasons. On September 21, 2012, another had toppled at Antop Hill. Fortunately, there were no casualties then.

Including Friday’s incident, till date, four mishaps have occurred at construction sites of J Kumar, right from skywalks to Eastern Freeway and monorail, in which one has died and five have sustained major or minor injuries.

This is the third mishap at monorail construction sites on the Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle stretch.
