After running wild in different parts of Dadar around two months ago, monkeys are now bothering residents of Chotani Road in Mahim, near the railway station.
This has some residents of Mahim very worried.

A 70-year-old resident of the area told dna, “We have been spotting these monkeys here for almost a month. There are two large male monkeys and they jump from building to building, looking for food. People don’t know what to do and are very scared of them because of their size.”

Gudisha Vaidya, a trustee at the non-governmental organisation In Defense of Animals (IDA) feels that it will be very difficult to capture the two animals, as they are constantly on the move. “The wildlife authorities probably need to tranquilise the animals. But it will be a huge task to get a hold of them.”

Confirming the presence of the two monkeys, resident Minne Chinoy calls her neighbours to warn them to shut their windows upon sighting the monkeys. “One monkey tried to pry the window open, but it was locked,” said A Itlia, a student from a building situated next to Chinoy’s building.

Another resident said that one of the animals entered his kitchen, picked up a carton of oil and threw it out of his third floor apartment. “They even visited our compound to eat fruits and flowers. I think they come here as this area has lots of trees where they can hide,” he added.

Sources from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA in Parel) said that monkey handlers who go out of town often leave their animals to fend for themselves. “These animals can only be handled by members of the forest department,” the source added.
