The arrest of a teacher of a prominent school in the eastern suburbs of the city on Thursday for allegedly sexually harassing a 15-year-old girl was the result of her mother’s persistence at getting to the bottom of her daughter’s unusually poor academic performance. This was done by saving text messages as evidence, and relentlessly pursuing the matter despite attempts by the school at a cover-up, the complaint filed in the matter reveals.

According to the complaint filed by the mother, the accused sent lewd text messages to the student, but when she refused his advances, he claimed that he was close to the school’s Principal and Coordinator, and that the three of them decided the fate of students.

“They damage the papers of those students going against them. He can give her very bad marks in her final exam as the papers are with them for few days before they are sent to the university (which the school is affiliated to),” says the complaint.

The matter came to light when, due to immense harassment, the student did not appear for her three preliminary examinations. As the victim was an exceptionally bright student, who was always among the top scorers in her class, this behaviour was very disturbing for her mother, prompting the mother to question her daughter’s friends. They informed the mother about what had been troubling the victim.

The mother immediately approached the school with a complaint but, according to the complaint, the school neglected the matter and asked the mother not to pay attention to such matters and concentrate on the girl’s studies instead.

Refusing to let the teacher off the hook, the mother collected evidence in the form of text messages the teacher had sent her daughter, and again approached the school. To her surprise, she was not allowed to meet the school authorities, the complaint states.

The complainant then informed the school that she would approach the police and file a complaint. It was then that the school agreed to meet her.

“In the meeting with school authorities, the complainant asked authorities to terminate the teacher with genuine reasons, but the school authorities were trying their best to shield the teacher. After a long battle, the principal agreed to terminate the teacher’s appointment on the condition that the complainant will not lodge a complaint with the police or anywhere else. The teacher’s services were terminated without a genuine reason,” the complaint says.

The mother did not let the matter go when her daughter scored low marks in the exam.

She sought a re-evaluation, which revealed that the papers sent to the international university the school is affiliated to had been tampered with.
