With one of his hands holding his profusely bleeding neck, which had been slit with a sharp weapon, to check blood loss, and other on the steering of his tempo, 22-year-old Moinnuddin Shaikh managed to drive to the Shivaji Nagar police station and call out for help, but unfortunately he collapsed before the police could do anything much.

Shaikh, a resident of Rafiq Nagar slums in Shivaji Nagar, got down from his tempo and moved forward calling out "saheb, saheb", for help, but he collapsed on the stairs of the police station around 8.30pm on Friday. A police team rushed him to Rajawadi Hospital but the hospital authorities declared him 'dead on arrival'.

According to the police, Shaikh had been working as a tempo driver since the last two months. And like every other day had left for work on Friday morning. In the evening, after having made his last delivery at Sarvodaya Nagar in Ghatkopar, he dropped the cleaner of the tempo and was returning home. The police know only so much, and Shaikh is dead, or else he could have thrown more light on the incident.

The Shivaji Nagar police suspect that he met someone on his way and offered him a lift and that unknown character perhaps slit his throat. But for what reason, they are clueless, as of now.

"The slit was quite deep. It's surprising how he managed to drive to the police station with such a grievous wound. Blood was oozing from the cut even as he called out for help. He must have lost a lot of blood on his way here. The seat and the steering wheel of his tempo were stained with blood," said a police officer at Shivaji Nagar station.

The police have registered a case of murder under IPC section 302 against unknown person.

Shaikh's family told the police that about a month back, Shaikh had a fight with a local, following which he lodged a case against him under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder). That man had been constantly asking Shaikh to withdraw the case. The police have detained a few people for questioning, and are probing all angles in the case.
