Model 'traps' DIG Paraskar, accuses him of rape

Friday, 25 July 2014 - 6:00am IST | Agency: dna

What is the case?
A 27-year-old Goregaon-based model files a complaint with the Malwani police in Malad West that Deputy Inspector General Sunil Paraskar has allegedly raped her on multiple occasions. Paraskar is posted at the state police headquarters in Colaba. He has been charged with rape under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code.

How did the two meet?
The model reportedly came into contact with Paraskar in October 2013, when she had filed a case at the Goregaon police station after someone posted her obscene pictures online. She met Paraskar for the first time to seek his help in this case. Then they met each other and got intimate on several occasions between November 2013 and May 2014, according to a source. Incidentally, her association with the Goregaan police and molestation complaints are nothing new. She had filed a molestation case against her neighbour at same police station in the same month.

Then, what made her complain?
A few months ago, Paraskar stopped responding to her calls and texts, “which did not go down well with her,” the source said. Last month, she somehow convinced Paraskar into meeting her at a hotel in Madh Island, where she captured the CCTV “evidence” of the alleged act. She then approached police commissioner Rakesh Maria, who referred her to the Malwani police.

So, was Paraskar trapped?
It looks so. According to an officer from the Malwani police station, "The woman approached us on Wednesday. We have registered a complaint of rape. It is not clear why she took so long to complain.” According to sources, the police refused to take her complaint in the beginning. It was after this that she decided to approach the commissioner of police with evidence. Both Paraskar and the model did not respond to dna's calls.

What happens now?
The police have not yet arrested Paraskar. According to Sadanand Date, Joint commissioner of police (crime), "The complainant approached the commissioner of police, after which a case was registered. Investigation has been taken up by the women's cell of the crime branch. The case is under investigation." Police say the e-mails between the two are “self-explanatory” and they will also examine their telephone conversations.

What's Paraskar's career profile?
Paraskar, a Maharashtra Public Service Commission officer, was promoted to the IPS cadre. He has worked as deputy commissioner (anti-narcotics cell). There, he was instrumental in cracking down on drug-peddlers. He was later transferred to the special branch as additional commissioner of the Mumbai police and later headed the north region as additional commissioner. Currently, he is DIG with Protection of Civil Rights (PCR). He had earlier also worked as assistant IG at the DGP office.
