Modak Sagar overflows, 57% of seven lakes' capacity filled

The Modak Sagar lake overflowed on Sunday afternoon after catchment area of the lake received heavy rainfall in the last one week. The lake overflowed around 3.05 pm, taking usable content in all seven lakes of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to 57 per cent of their total capacity.

The seven lakes that supply all of Mumbai's water — 3,750 million litre a day against the actual demand of 4,200 million litre — have seen substantial rise in water levels after good rainfall in the last one week in their catchment areas. However, the present level of water in all lakes are around 6% less than last year.

As per the water hydraulic department, so far, the catchment area has received less water than last year. "Good rainfall in the last one week resulted rise in lake level," said Ashok Tawadiya, chief engineer of Hyrdaulic engineering department BMC.

The average rainfall of the city is between 2,100 mm to 2,400 mm. This year so far, city has already received 1600 mm rainfall. Tulsi lake was already overflown last week.

According to the civic hydraulic engineering department, on Sunday, the usable content in all the reservoirs was 8,19,742 million litre, which can supply water to city for at least 200 days.
