You might call this a slap in the face of security in these times of terror. A Delhi-based businessman, who was found with two live bullets tucked into his baggage, managed to saunter in and out of four airports in three countries over the span of last week without the cartridges being detected.

It was only at the fag end of his return trip that security officials at Mumbai airport spotted the bullets. They were found in a shaving kit in one of the bags that the businessman, Abhishek Jain, had carried on his tour to Colombo and the Maldives and back.

Jain has claimed that he carried the bullets unwittingly and inadvertently – something the police say is quite plausible.

However, the incident has set the alarm bells ringing. Security experts said this incident raises serious questions over security checks being carried out at airports in India and abroad.

Jain, who started his tour from Delhi last Wednesday (May 15), reached Mumbai by flight after which he flew to Colombo and then to the Maldives. All along, the bullets were in his bag but went undetected at the airports.

On the return leg of the tour – Maldives to Colombo to Mumbai – officials of Mumbai International Airport Limited or MIAL noticed two bullet-shaped objects in Jain’s bag during X-ray screening. Jain was about to board a Jet Airways flight to Delhi. The officials alerted the Central Industrial Security Force or CISF, which handles airport security. “The bullets were fished out of the shaving kit,” said a source at the airport.

Jain was frisked and the contents of his bag rummaged through, said assistant commissioner Madhukar Sankhe of the airport police station. Senior inspector Dilip Kumar Taral said Jain has told them that the shaving kit and bag belong to his uncle and he was unaware of the bullets being there. “His uncle holds a gun licence and it’s possible that the cartridges had remained in the bag” said Taral. Police officials said cases of bullets being forgotten in bags are common with flyers.
