Dharavi Diary, an NGO based in Mahim has started a mobile van for the less privileged students in order to give practical knowledge of coding, problem-solving skill development,

The mobile van, known as ‘STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Van’, is an initiative for students of class 7-10 to promote interactive learning.

The van will be seen at different BMC schools in the city for the next 10 days and will be traveling to various community centers, schools in different cities including Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.

Nawneet Rajan, the founder of Dharavi Diary, said that the initiative came to mind after he observed that students spend most of their time in schools rather than in learning centers located in their areas.

He said, “Through this, we aim at three C’s - classroom, community, and citizenship. We are trying to engage children and teachers to give them hands-on learning exposure. We are joining hands with lower-income schools for the initiative. The van has a lot of educational kits, computers with interactive videos to learn.”

The initiative, which started in January, was located in different slums of Mahim, Ghatkopar and Kurla last month. Now, they have joined hands with four BMC schools in the city.

“We are also teaching them sustainable goals under green energy. We are giving them a conceptual understanding of climate change, reducing of carbon footprints, making and installing of solar panels. Once the pilot project succeeds, later on, we will be further discussing the initiative to policymakers,” said Ranjan.
