Doctors witness 40% rise in people suffering from phantom vibration syndrome

Have you ever felt your phone ringing or vibrating, when the fact is that it isn't? If your answer is yes then you are suffering from a disease called phantom vibration syndrome. According to the city-based doctors, they are witnessing 30-40 per cent rise in patients, who show symptoms of this condition.

Dr Shailesh Umate, a psychiatrist at Nath Hospital in Thane, said: "We are witnessing a rise in such people. The way young generation is addicted to mobile phones, we expect a 60-70 per cent rise in the next few years."

Doctors also said that addiction to mobile phones can lead to loss of concentration and accidents. "Such people constantly worry about possible calls and messages on their phone and keep having the feeling of their phone ringing. This leads to loss of concentration at work or while studying. This may also invite accidents in case the person is driving. It also leads to social and occupational problem," said Umate.

He added: "Such person can feel the phone ringing when they are away from the phone. The frequency of checking mobile increases intensely. With the intensity of checking phone, it also increases anxiety and invites distress."

While speaking to youths in Thane, they agreed that they can not live without their mobile phones. One of the them, who refused to be named, agreed that he even dreams of his phone ringing in the middle of the night.

Umate said that people with phantom vibration syndrome can be treated with medication, behavioural/cognitive therapy. "We also ask the patient to follow cell phone fasting and stay away from it," he said.

Other diseases associated with mobile phones
Nomophobia: Where a person is worried whether travelling to a particular destination will have access to his cell phone. He is worried about mobile connectivity at the location and gets anxious of being inaccessible.

Cyberchondria: The person keeps surfing the internet regarding various diseases and feels that he is suffering from some of the researched diseases.

Cybersickness: Due to excessive usage of mobile phones can lead to eye dryness, dizziness, uneasiness, vomitting, among others.
