Five policemen were injured here, one of them seriously, when hundreds of locals attacked the personnel while staging a road blockade over frequent power cuts.

The incident took place late Friday night when residents from Pragati Nagar took to the streets around 9.30 PM to protest power cuts there since a last few days and staged a spontaneous rasta roko disrupting traffic in the area, police said today. When a police team arrived on the scene to disperse them, irked locals began pelting stones leaving five cops including a PSI injured.

Following this, police fired a couple of rounds in the air to quell the mob and canecharged them. No local was injured in the police action. The police constable, who was badly wounded was identified as Firoz Tadvi, and was admitted to a local hospital, they said.

As many as 34 persons were arrested in this connection and the mob was booked under section 307 of the IPC besides being charged for rioting, police added.
