Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has moved the civic body with a demand. They have urged the BMC to give free homes to descendents of 106 hutatmas or martyrs who laid their lives for Samyukta Maharshtra, on the lines of mill workers. MNS corporator Sudhir Jadhav has demanded this by moving a notice of motion this month.

"Mill workers of the city are being given free housing on the same mill lands which are being commercially exploited for creating real estate stocks. The government has considered them for the scheme. Similarly, the martyrs who fought and laid their lives fighting for the unified Maharashtra should also be honoured. To express gratitude to these martyrs, BMC should take an initiative. If the BMC is planning to construct 10 lakh homes over a period of 20 years, then the civic body should consider honouring the families of the martyrs by giving one home to each of the descendents," said Sudhir Jadhav, MNS corporator from Prabhadevi.

He also went a step ahead in his demand and have asked the municipal corporation to give jobs to at least one of the descendents. "The civic body should consider these demands," said Jadhav.

Honouring the martyrs of unified Maharashtra has always been a favourite subject for politicians. In 2014, Shiv Sena had raked up a controversy by questioning the Gujarati trading community for their participation. Later, even the MNS president Raj Thackarey had grabbed the opportunity and jumped in the controversy. In August last year, Congress and Shiv Sena had almost come to blows at a function in Lower Parel at the unified Maharashtra memorial garden.
