While it is common knowledge that the State Election Commission (SEC) is entrusted with the task of ensuring the model code of conduct for civil elections is adhered to, the election body was caught on the wrong foot by a Vile Parle resident on Tuesday. The resident spotted calendars issued by the MNS on the desks of the SEC staff at the administrative building opposite Mantralaya in Mumbai.

Chief Election Commissioner JS Saharia had declared the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BCM) election dates on January 11. Once the code of conduct kicked in, various political banners and flags were either covered or removed across the city.

"When I went to complain about illegal banners which were not removed, I noticed that the monitoring body was promoting parties in their office," said social worker Santosh Gholap, 37, who informed senior authorities about his findings.

Violating the code of conduct can lead to the registration of a First Information Report under relevant sections of the Representation of People's Act 1951 and Indian Penal Code depending on the severity of the offence.
