The future of Chembur-Mahalaxmi Monorail seems to be in dark with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) not being able to find a operator for Monorail corridor since last one year despite making three attempts. On Saturday, bids were floated for the fourth time to appoint a new operator.
The first attempt was made in January 2017 and despite several companies showing interest in running the Monorail, none have submitted their bids. Companies like Reliance Infrastructure, Adani Group, IL&FS and Singapore based SMRT Corporation had earlier shown interest in running the troubled Monorail corridor.
On Saturday, MMRDA floated bids for the fourth time and has said that it has given extension up to March 12 to potential bidders due to technical glitch. "One company could not upload their bid on the last day due to some technical issues. There was not other bid received till the last date which was February 28, and now the extension is given till March 12," UPS Madan, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, said.
The first phase of Monorail between Chembur and Wadala was made operational in 2014, but was temporarily suspended in November 2017 due to an empty coach carrying fire. However, now the MMRDA plans to appoint a operator for the whole corridor measuring around 19-km. The Monorail operations and maintenance is currently under the Malaysian based Scomi Engineering and the MMRDA. Scomi have been having differences over the functioning and maintenance of the Monorail.
