In one of the highest budgetary allocations in history, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis-led Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) sanctioned a budget of Rs 12,157 crore for the 2018-19 fiscal on Thursday.
Mumbai got the lion's share for various infrastructure projects like Metro construction, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) and several road projects. This year's allocation is nearly double that of the 2016-17 and 2017-18 fiscal.
The MMRDA has made a budgetary allocation of Rs 4,700 crore for seven Metro projects that includes Rs 1,558 crore for the Dahisar-DN Nagar Metro-2A corridor, Rs 1,262 crore for Andheri East-Dahisar East Metro-7 corridor, Rs 700 crore for DN Nagar-Mandale Metro-2B corridor, Rs 500 crore for Colaba-Seepz Metro-3 corridor, followed by Rs 550 crore for three Metro projects, namely Wadala-Thane Metro corridor, Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Mertro, and Lokhanwala-Vikhroli Metro corridor.
In 2017-18, the budgetary allocation for Metro projects was Rs 3,273 crore; Rs 2,153 crore was allocated in 2016-2017. Further, this year, the MMRDA has made the second highest allocation (in the past two years) of Rs 2,100 crore for the country's longest proposed sealink connecting Sewri and Navi Mumbai, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL).
Besides this, Rs 217 crore has been allocated for the Chembur-Jacob Circle Monorail project that is expected to be operational by April 2018. An amount of Rs 1,290 crore was allocated to the Extended Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project (MUIP) and Rs 126 crore to maintain the Western and Eastern Express Highways.
For the construction of the Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial at Indu Mills, an allocation of Rs 150 crore has been made this year.
A sum of Rs 81 crore has been allocated for infrastructure projects in the Bandra Kurla Complex and Rs 20 crore for the Mithi River development and protection.
The MMRDA said in a statement, "Rs 1,290 crore has been allocated to develop flyovers, creek bridges and road network to connect Mumbai to satellite cities nearby."
The statement further added, "A separate labour welfare fund will be created through various penal actions against contractors responsible for accidents causing light, grievous and fatal injuries, reporting to accidents late or wilfully suppressing them. The MMRDA will draft a policy based on which the victims and their families can be compensated."
