Going by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) logic, Metro Rail Corporation's (MMRC) Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro-3 underground corridor is prone to terrorist attacks compared the elevated metro line.

It listed the security threat as one of the reasons in a communication to a Vile Parle-based educational trust that wrote to the agency requesting an underground corridor for the DN Nagar-Mandale Metro-2B. The trust's land is likely to be required for the construction of the elevated Metro-2B line.

K Vijaya Lakshmi, Chief, Transport and Communication Division, MMRDA, in a communication to the trust, said, "Making underground alignment is not feasible due to following reasons given by M/S DMRC" that include the security factor and issues such as need for less land acquisition, lesser construction time and cost.

Lakshmi has stated that it is not technically and financially feasible to go for an underground alignment. An annexure attached to the communication contains a chapter on the selection of the type of alignment from the detailed project report prepared by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). It states that underground metro stations are more prone to terrorist attacks than and elevated alignments. The chapter also highlights that underground alignment is more risky to passengers during disruptions compared to an elevated line.

Lakshmi told DNA, "I have attached the DMRC's opinion given to MMRDA. I will have to check what was exactly written by me in the particular communication."

Dilip Kawathkar, spokesperson, MMRDA, said, "One of the important reasons why we are going with an elevated line is the cost factor." A query sent to MMRC, which is the sole agency executing underground Metro corridor in the city, did not receive a response.
